There are some substantial savings on auto insurance if you spend a little time to take advantage of the available auto insurance discounts. I’ve tried to save you a little time by putting together a list of potential discounts. They include:

  • Combination discounts – you can save between 10-20% off your premiums if you insure your home and car with the same company. Discounts may also be available for insuring both cars with the same carrier.
  • Defensive Driving Classes – you may be able to save up to 10% in your premiums.
  • Good student discounts – Students with GPAs of 3.0 or higher may be eligible to save as much as 20%.
  • Low mileage discounts – if you don’t drive very much (less than 5,000 miles per year), let your insurance company know. You can save as much as 10%.
  • Retirements Discounts – Many carriers will provide a discount if you are retired since you will presumably drive less.
  • Groups and Association Discounts – Organizations or associations of which you are a member may provide group discounts on auto insurance rates.
  • Anti-theft features – Certain states provide discounts for having a car alarm or other anti-theft measures in your car.
  • College Students At College Far Away – If your college aged student is over 100 miles away from the insured car, you could save as much as 40%.

Be sure to let your insurance representative know any and all of the discounts you may be eligible for in order to get the best rate.

And if you're thinking of buying a new car, be sure to shop around for the best auto loan rates. Spending a few minutes investigating the best deals can save you hundreds of dollars per year.
