Banks will often market and promote checking and savings accounts with bonus offers in order to stimulate interest and demand. The offers can come in many forms, including cash, consumer electronics (iPod, Wii, Kindle, etc.). For banks, the offers are a less expensive way to generate demand than raising rates. From a consumer standpoint, the offers often mask a low underlying rate but can be attractive if the consumer was going to open the product anyway.
Bonus offers for opening an account generally come with requirements that ensure the bank is providing the bonus in return for a real account. Banks will often require that consumers fund the account with a minimum deposit, stay open for a defined period of months, receive regular direct deposits, or be utilized to pay bills or initiate debit or credit card transactions.
