Companies such as Bain, Microsoft, and HP are using Second Life to interview potential recruits. The attached article thinks it's pretty silly. What do you think?

I am in my mid-50s now and I've been trying to get my hands around everything going on with the internet. Alot of it makes sense and Second Life never has completely. At first, Second Life really concerned me because I thought that entering into a virtual world isn't a good way to "escape" reality. Then, a colleague with three teenagers pointed out he is glad that his kids are on there as it in fact prepares his teenagers for reality and is much less harmful than video games today, drugs, etc. - other things kids do to escape from reality.

I would submit that anybody in there mid-20s who spends enough time on one of these sites to figure out how to secure one of these interviews would lack the social skills that you need to survive in one of these companies.

Some would say though that existing in the virtual world as exactly the kind of skills that employees will need in the future. Sales, customer service, etc. are all moving to virtual environments. Knowing how to navigate these environments, the protocols, etc. are critical.

I think using Second Life is a creative way to help screen new recruits. I'd use it as one indicator but be sure to also interview in-person.
