Americans already have one of the worst maternity policies in the developed world. In Canada, working mothers are given one year off, much of it paid. Here in the US, working mothers are eligible for 12 weeks unpaid leave. If an employer is generous they will receive some paid leave. But even that is getting skimpier every year.
