For alternative energy to make a dent in US energy generation, massive construction of wind farms will be necessary. But just like the old fashion power plants, there's going to be a "not in my backyard" mentality. Here's a good example of this in a Central Texas county:
Concerns by many here that construction and operation of wind turbines could harm wildlife, the tourism industry and the Fredericksburg area’s property values have made Gillespie County one of the most-vocal locations in the state against the industry.
Gillespie County is the first county in Texas where there’s been this much organized resistance to wind energy.

Not in my backyard is a big problem in Massachusetts. Our Senators, who say they support renewable energy won't support a wind farm in Nantucket Sound. Why? Because the blades would be visible from Ted Kennedy's summer house and from the houses of the rich on Nantucket. It's a disgrace. Especially when reports out of the Netherlands prove that winfarms actually improve the value of a property.
The rich save the world environmentalists are all backpedaling now and trying to come up with excuses - it will kill the birds, it will harm shipping, etc. - but those have all been disproven.
I hope they build those windfarms and that Ted Kennedy has to look at them from his Hyannisport home.

Very interesting and sad. Looks like Kennedy and his friends seem to be still fighting this, but it's not going unnoticed. I found this article:
Why Liberals Are Turning on Ted Kennedy
The source of unhappiness is Kennedy's efforts to kill an offshore wind farm on Nantucket Sound. Cape Wind was to be the first such project in the United States and a source of pride to environmentally minded New Englanders. Polls show 84 percent of Massachusetts residents in favor. But now it appears that America's first offshore wind farm will be near Galveston, Texas.
