BankProvidentOnline is the online division of The Provident Bank, a community bank headquartered in Amesbury, MA.   The Provident Bank was founded in 1828 as a mutual savings bank and unlike many of its peers, has retained its mutual savings status, meaning that it is owned by its customers.

The Provident Bank and by extension BankProvidentOnline is FDIC insured and DIF insured.  Depositors Insurance Fund (DIF) provides protection above and beyond the money covered by the FDIC to participating Massachusetts savings banks.  Even if you do not reside in Massachusetts you are still covered by DIF.

BankProvidentOnline's Green Savings Account comes with no minimums, no fees, and above market rates.  It is the only product currently offered by the bank.

The Provident Bank is ranked 5 Stars ot of 5 (Excellent) by Baeur Financial for its safety and soundness, the highest ranking possible.

I actualy have an account with this bank and it's BankProvidentOnline, not ProvidentBankOnline (as in the tag and article). It's confusing--I always have to think twice when I want to login. I wish they'd change it. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who gets it mixed up.

You'd think they'd make a big deal out of being a mutual bank. I had no clue. Thanks for the info.

Opening the account was easy. And I know that all the banks are doing this. But it was such a coincidence that the day after I funded the account the rate dropped from 2.40% to 2.15%.
My brother said to warn him before I fund another account LOL
I told him I was thinking about GMAC next.

Just moved my savings here from DCU as the DCU savings rates are 0.5% right now. Very easy to open account and transfer funds online.
