By some estimates, the country's major carriers have consumed perhaps $100 billion in capital during the past decade, but Southwest Airlines continues to be profitable.

What does Southwest know that no one else in airlines does? It keeps things simple and consistent, which drives costs down, maximizes productive assets, and helps manage customer expectations.

I was worried about how much I would have to pay for air travel this year for my December vacation. I decided to try to book early at Southwest and I was pleasantly surprised to get a non-stop flight that was almost $100 less than I paid last year on Delta. And I don't have to pay extra for checking in my luggage!
