No matter what the tax rates have been, in postwar America tax revenues have remained at about 19.5% of GDP.

There's an interesting chart showing the top tax rate brackets and the revenue as a percentage of GDP. I find it hard to believe that the top tax bracket was as high as 90%, but I would think this probably only included a tiny percentage of Americans. The chart really needs to factor in more brackets than just the top brackets.
