Is the solution to the US's healthcare problems really consumer driven healthcare? More data on doctor and hospital performance as well as medical costs needs to be available to the patient for this to be a viable solution. Right now it is very difficult to make informed decisions on the best, most inexpensive medical care.

I'm not sure what the author of the article you cite really wants. He rants against government control but doesn't offer any solutions. I think your intro is more on the money. Provide the data so that the market can help drive down the costs. But even this has its problems. How do you get accurate information, how do you evaluate Dr.s side by side. After all, some Drs have a tougher group of patients. Health care needs to be discussed but I do believe that inthe end a market based solution is what will work.
