Now the very rich can feel very happy on their way to the club, driving the new Lexus hybrid and satisfied that they are doing their part to reduce carbon emissions. Think again guys. Lexus is fooling you and you are fooling yourselves.Today's New York Times has an article "Conspicuous Consumption with Green Illusions" that tells it like it is. This new "hybrid" is terrible on gas and, as a result, just plain lousy on carbon dioxide emissions -- the big carbon footprint. When you get around 21 miles to the gallon, you are leaving a very big footprint, indeed. To quote the NY Times article, "The LS 600hL also emits more greenhouse gasses than the average new car that currently achieves 27.5 mpg. So a common Toyota Camry, among dozens of models, leaves a smaller carbon footprint than this hybrid land yacht."But the rich will buy it and feel good -- doing their part for the globe. They will tell their friends the sacrifices they are making. Their friends will go out and buy it too. It is pure hype and Lexus is going to make a ton of money.
