I happen to believe that ultimately nuclear energy in some form is going to be the solution to the world's energy problem. It is the only proven, scalable, dense source of plentiful energy. Fission reactors are getting better and better and eventually some day, fusion reactors will become a reality.
This WSJ journal article does a good job going over the pros and cons of the new Generation III reactors that promise safer, more cost-effective, and less waste-producing operation.
The biggest problem seems to be that nuclear is still not as cost effective as coal and gas fired plants. But as the technology matures and the price of gas and coal increases, this equation will change.
What do you think? Is nuclear ready for a comeback.
