I am in Chicago now and have been for several days. I come here regularly on business, but never have the expectations been so high in America's most racially divided city that a minority - in fact a minority who represents this state in the Senate - will be elected President.
We are already living in a post-racial society. Barack Obama never could have been made the Democratic nominee were that not the case. His status as candidate for President indicates as much.
But, expectations are too high these days. People here are treating it as a forgone conclusion that he will win. Disappointment will become anger at a system which has already proven not to be fair. The situation will be exacerbated by anything like the George Bush v. Al Gore 2000 scenario. But, this time it will look much more like 1968. The entire anti-war movement will come here to Chicago and ignite an already explosive situation.
As much as I fear for my country and for the economy if Obama is elected, I fear for it more if he isn't.
