Stein is pretty bright if you ask me, and his advice is not unreasonable. First, holding a mortgage makes sense for tax and cash flow purposes. Second, commodities are risky. Third, you should diversify your investments outside of the US. In principle, each point has merit. I happen to disagree with the third piece of advice. I believe that at this point in the emerging market cycle, you would be best to keep your investments very, very heavily in the US.
