The Treasury announced that beginning January 1, 2008, the investment limits on Savings Bonds will be reduced from the current $30,000 per year to $5,000 per year.

It's the latest in a string of recent changes that are making savings bonds less attractive.

I remember the good'ole days when the I-bond fixed rate was over 3%, when the initial holding period was only 6 months instead of 12, and when you could buy these with a cash back credit card. Now with a $5K per year limit, so much for them being a decent alternative for cash savings.
