Big Pharma stocks are good investments --in part because these companies make drugs that save lives and in part because they may be very good at keeping secrets from the public. What else explains the silence following last week's news of potential and serious links between statins and cancer? Statins are used by huge numbers of men and women in this country. Cancer killed well over half a million Americans this year. If the statins I am taking are going to give me cancer, shouldn't I know? Why is no one touching this story?Google statins and you quickly see claims about the positive relationship between statin use and breast and prostate cancers. You also see a note about an earlier study showing a possible connection between cancer and statins. But this last study is even hard to find on google. The facts are that cancer is a major threat to humans, and one has to wonder why the latest study is being ignored by the media and the medical establishment.The New York Times today has some sobering facts about cancer in this country. About a million and a half new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year. One in four American deaths are caused by cancer, and over $200 billion was the estimated cost of cancer in 2006.We are not, therefore, talking about something of interest only to a few. We need to learn more about the study just reported, and to pursue its findings aggressively and publicly.
