What does going ex mean?

The day before a company goes “ex-dividend�? represents

the last day in which investors can purchase the stock and still collect the firm's next declared dividend payment!
***********************************************************

On the ex-dividend date, a firm's stock price usually declines to reflect the amount of the dividend.

For example, if a stock is trading at $100 and it pays a quarterly dividend of $2 per share, then the stock should open at $98 on the ex-dividend date.
