Here's an interesting video from the WSJ that discusses the distinction between investing and trading. In an article last week (Raj Rajaratnam and the Wall Street Way) I discussed whether the Galleon Group was a case study for why the little guy didn't stand a chance when faced with the immense resources and sometimes illegal ways Wall Street trades and conducts business. This video draws a distinction between those who trade for the short-term and those who invest. Bottom line: if you try to trade against the pros, you will lose. If you are investing for the long-term, you may stand a better chance. Of course, I don't fully believe in investing long-term in stocks so that may be a problem.
