Google is expanding from search and advertising to developing cheap energy alternatives to coal.
Google co-founder Larry Page said "Our goal is to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity that is cheaper than coal,"
Is this evidence that Google is losing focus on its core business? According to Co-founder Sergey Brin, it won't take away from Google's goal of organizing the world's information. The company works on what it calls the 70/20/10 rule. That is, 70% of its efforts go to the core businesses of search and advertising, 20% to adjacent areas and 10% to anything Google engineers feel like pursuing.
One analyst quoted in the article said he expects Google to still primarily be a search company five years from now. We'll see how successful Google's 70/20/10 model will be.

I think Google is losing its focus. It's hubris to think a web company can solve the world's energy problems. Google still has to make its businesses outside of search work, never mind alternative energy.

I reckon its a great idea, google of course is at the center of one of the biggest information resources in the world.
They could do anything with the amount of knowladge that passes through their servers.
Think of that next time you just see them as a "Web Based Search Company"
