It's all over the media that Apple has sold a million iPhones. Good for them. Now they need to show that they can really sell them to people other than tech geeks and fend off stiff competition.
The reality is that 1 milion phones isn't really that much. I did a quick Google search and found that 190.5 million cellphones were sold IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2005! So Apple has a ways to go.
It must:
1. Show that the iPhone is more than just a techno-gadget covered by the biggest geek in the family. It made some strides in this by lowering the price by $200. Now it needs to decouple from AT&T and offer it across all networks.
2. Fend off lower-priced challenges from Nokia, Samsung, and others. Take a look below and you'll see what I mean.
The race is on. The next 20 million will be the hardest. Let's see if Steve Jobs is up to it.
