Will Twitter Ever Be Used by Anyone Other than Silicon Valley Nerds?

Twitter is a hot start-up that Silicon Valley has been buzzing about for months. It just received a second round of financing. The question is, will it ever make it mainstream or will it remain the darling of the Valley?

Twitter, a cross-platform messaging system just received a second round of funding from several prominent VCs. I'm assuming the funding was a good seven figure number and this places a pretty multiple on the young company.

Now, if you're wondering what the heck Twitter is and what it does join the crow. If you read the Silicon Valley Blogs they have been abuzz about the company for months and many have described it as the next big app. It might be. I checked out the site several weeks ago, signed up, and thought about using it. At the time, I think I had some inkling of its usefulness, but like a dream, that inkling has faded into oblivion.

I want to know if anyone outside of Silicon Valley has used Twitter. They report having 300,000 users, of whom I'm sure the majority are concentrated in the Silicon Valley region. Will someone outside of the tech, nerd digirati please tell me if this is useful and how you use it? What problem does it solve? And who is using it?

I'm not asking this to be dismissive or snarky to Twitter. Clearly they have captured someone's attention and 300,000 users isn't something to sneeze at. But I'm still unsure whether this product is going be received well outside of the confines of Silicon Valley.

Someone once said that there is a market for everything and twitter may develop. I consider myself a very early adapter and I don't see this working for me. I just really don't feel the need to twit my friends to tell them the latest idea that is flying through my head about fuel prices as I pump gas. I can generally wait until I formulate my thoughts a little later in the day, then post on my blog or distribute an email. I am sure that they too will appreciate that I am not so ridiculous to think that I can drown them in my thoughts and reports on my activities on a moment-by-moment basis.

If they can get users they'll make money. I can see teen agers using this but not adults. Then again, I was wrong about camera phones, so who knows.

Twitter is undoubtably used by a lot of Silicon Valley Nerds. Based on my research for the Twitterfacts blog (http://twitterfacts.blogspot.com), I can say that Twitter is used on a worldwide scale. Especially in Japan and in Europe there are very active and closely linked communities on the Twitter platform.

Thanks for this info. I read your Blog and your information is very informative. But the numbers still look pretty low - 854 Twitter accounts in Belgium. The question is whether this technology will ever make it into the mainstream, on a global basis.
