A couple of years ago, I thought that it was absolutely ludicrous that all municipal governments where speaking about WiFi as a solution to bridging the digital divide (provide less advantageous people with low cost or free internet access). The only rationale that I could find was that Google, Motorola and Earthlink were just getting naive cities like Philly to sign up to waste taxpayer money on a technology bound to be obsolete before the these networks were ever completed (and, even if they weren't obsolete, the technology would never bridge the digital divide in the way suggested). It is refreshing to see that Chicago - a city where municipal officials are perhaps more prone to being bought than anywhere else - has realized the absurdity of these muni WiFi proposals and isn't going to waste taxpayer money on WiFi.
