This is an article co-written several years ago by Andrew Whinston at the University of Texas at Austin. Although written in 1998, the articles central premise seems accurate to me: physical books will eventually be supplanted by the web. Events of the last 9 years only support the paper's reasoning.
As a note, I studied with Andrew Whinston in 1997 and found him to be a true visionary on where the Web was headed.

It will eventually, but only when there is a good device that let's you download what you want to read and is easy for everyone to use. Sony is working on these devices and I bet Apple is too, but we are still in the early stages.
