I took a bit of a summer break on charting the decline in savings and cd rates, hoping that when I returned, the trends would different. I knew it was false hope, and so it was. Savings and CD rates continued their decline, with the average savings rate dropping below 1.3% APY and the 5-year average CD rate breaking below 3% APY. Here's the run-down.

Savings and CD rate averages have held steady over the past two weeks although the top savings rate has dropped significantly. Two weeks ago the top savings rate was 1.75% APY and now the top rate is 1.55% APY.

After remaining steady for the past three weeks, average savings rates and cd rates dropped over the past week. Perhaps more significantly, the top savings rate tumbled.

Savings and CD rates barely moved at all in the last week as the environment can best be described as flat. This marks the third week in a row that rates have barely budged. I haven't seen such a quiet period in the last two years.

SmartyPig is getting ready to buck the trend of declining savings rates by announcing that it is raising its rate to 2.15% from 2.01% APY. As part of that increase though, it's creating a tiered rate system. Only the first $50,000 will receive the higher rate.

Savings and CD rates continued to drop last week, although the decline in average savings rates slowed to a crawl. Some of the top CD rates dropped though, effectively lowering the best rates available.

Unlike two weeks ago where we saw a steep drop in CD and savings rates, rates were mostly flat over the past week. Savings Rates Average savings rates held their ground last week, remaining at 1.37% APY. The top rates also remained the same with Southern Community Bank's Ready Saver 2% APY Savings Account leading the pack of non-promo rates. For promotional rates, Everbank remains on top with their 3-month introductory bonus rate of 2.25% APY. After the three-month period, the rate drops down to 1.26% APY for a blended one year APY of 1.51% APY

For the fifth week in a row, Southern Community bank had the best savings rate on the BestCashCow rate tables, paying 2% APY on savings deposits. That's 60 basis points higher than the BestCashCow savings rate average which remained steady this week at 1.39% APY.

Savings rates continue their slow drift down with the average dropping from 1.40% APY to 1.39% APY. Tthe top savings rate remained at 2% (ReadySaver.com from Southern Community Bank). Everbank also continued to offer their promo rate of 2.25% APY for the first three months on new money. After three months, the rate drops to 1.26% APY for a 1-year blended APY of 1.51%.

Savings rates dipped very slightly this past week with the average dropping from 1.41% APY to 1.40% APY. Despite this drop, the top savings rate remained at 2% (ReadySaver.com from Southern Community Bank). Everbank also continued to offer their promo rate of 2.25% APY for the first three months on new money. After three months, the rate drops to 1.26% APY for a 1-year blended APY of 1.51%.

The spread between savings rates and CD rates hit a record this week as savings rates and short-term CD rates continued to decline while longer-maturity CDs held their return. The increasing spread indicates that banks are compensating longer-term deposits more now than ever before.

The best savings account rates remain near the 2% range this week. Everbank tops the list with their guaranteed 2.25% 3-month promo rate for new money. Southern Community Bank has the highest non-promo rate with their Ready Saver Account.

Average savings rates moved up slightly in the past week as several banks joined the BestCashCow rate tables with competitive rates. This included a non-promo savings rate at 2% APY. CD Rates held steady with the highest rating being a 5-year CD paying 3.55% APY. All rates are as of 2/22/2010.
