As the head of Exxon, Tillerson signed an agreement with Putin in 2011 to drill in the Arctic that would have been worth over $150 billion to Russia but has since been suspended by the 2014 US economic sanctions resulting from Russia’s annexation of the Crimea. Tillerson was awarded the Order of Friendship by Vladimir Putin in 2013.
Prior to becoming CEO of Exxon in 2006, Tillerson was in charge of Exxon Neftegas which oversaw Exxon projects in Russia, including Sakhalin-1 and its Caspian Sea projects.
