Marcus: By Goldman Sachs Reviews (34)
-
I made a mistake with the timing of some transactions and tried to move $300k into my Goldman Sachs account from a corresponding account before the money had arrived in the corresponding account. A few hours after I entered the transaction as an immediate transfer, I realized it would be rejected and tried to call Goldman to cancel the transaction because I thought they would charge me some enormous fee. I reached the rep in a second and he said that there is never a fee for anything like this, or a fee at all! Right there they won my business. Barclays or or Ally or Synchrony would have raped me for this.

Well one would wait for it to clear before trying to move it somewhere else. Besides the moving of the money from bank to Bank loses interest. Those banks have similar interest rates so your not really earning that much more .

Opened here because the rate is always higher than the other established places. Every thing is easy, but I wish they would be faster to raise their rates.

I have been using Marcus for over 6 months. Their CSRs are helpful and opening up an account was easy. Linking to external accounts (4) only produced one hitch but Marcus sleared that up. The transfers go through pretty quickly and they are aggressive at hiking their deposit rates before other online banks.
-
I had an issue with a large transfer from HSBC that was delayed (by HSBC of course). Meanwhile I had made some transfers out of my Marcus account and realized I would be dramatically overdrawn. I called Marcus and the first thing that their fellow explained is that I would never ever be charged a fee. I found that very refreshing.

Marcus is spot on. Fast transfers and good rate. Some rates may be higher but the banks are shady and you lose money with fees and access.
-
Been with Ally and several others. I opened the OSA with these guys and was immediately sold after seeing the ACHes went through immediately. This happened both in and out. I cannot stand all of the holds that other banks given. Transfers here are instantanious.

They do put a hold on your account. If you notice when the transfer is initiated and when the money is actually AVAILABLE, there is a delay. However, they will credit interest to your account IMMEDIATELY even on uncleared funds which other online banks do not.
-
There are plenty of good banks on the list (and plenty of not so good ones). I have found Marcus to the most user friendly.
-
The early withdrawal penalties are confiscatory. 270 days in interest as a penalty to cancel a 1-year CD! Most banks change only 3 months.
-
Rates are a little lower than the best rates, but it is quality outfit where service matters. I cannot say the same of all of the places on the list.

I rate Marcus one star. Before Marcus, I had the GE account followed by the GS Bank. Now the name has changed to Marcus and it looks more like a brokerage account and advertisement for additional Goldman Sachs services and products. To many steps to review your posted transactions. I was expecting a Fed Gov't deposit on December 29th and it posted January 2, 2018. However, in other accounts (Sallie Mae and Fidelity) my allotments posted December 30th. What gives? Also, has anyone noticed how they post same day transactions? Your balances are sometimes out of sequence. For instance, how can the system list a deposit balance of $25,000 under the balance of $20,000? Balances are not rolling balances. They are posted more like stock positions in a brokerage account. Each deposit/withdrawal is listed like a stock purchase/sell. Just because Marcus has a high dividend rate, does not make it five stars. You can't email them concerns and the online chat limits topics of discussion. Telephone calls for assistance are hit and miss. If you are looking for bare bones... this is the account for you. If you need assistance, timely transactions to post, accurate tracking, or something out of the ordinary look elsewhere.

Goldman throws around its big ad dollars and gets a lot in return. One thing that they are clearly getting from this site and others is a willingness to gloss over the fact that the early withdrawal penalties are exculpatory. 270 days of interest on a 1-year CD is not market! 3 months is. Think about that before you lock in. Barclays and Sallie Mae still charge only 180 days on a 5-year!

I will not be using them again. Two big downsides of GS Bank that I experienced. The first is how significant is their early withdrawal penalty and the second is that they do not have a grace period when opening an account. I tried to cancel an account that was funded two days ago and was charged with a whopping 1.2% penalty. First time I have ever lost money on a CD deposit.
-
hard to get acct opened more than 5 day to get mini dep. made still waiting
-
Never again. Tried to open a joint account and had far too many hassles when I wanted to know the status of my application. After a lengthy of arguing with the phone about cancelling my application, finally got it cancelled. POOR customer service!
-
I have had accounts with many of the banks on this list. This one is the best. It is the only one which executes transfers inbound and outbound immediately. If you want to earn interest over the weekend, you can transfer in of Friday. And, if you need the money to be somewhere else, you can transfer out 1 hour before you need it. EBSB is also outstanding on this score, but Goldman is the only place where I feel comfortable going way over FDIC numbers.
-
Website is a breeze and transfers are immediate.

Never had I ever had more problems with an online bank as I had with GS Bank. Their ACH transfers or employee incompetence caused me nothing but headaches. I was forced to provide proof of ownership of an already verified external account when my first fund transfer to an external bank from GS Bank was reversed. Why? GS Bank wanted proof of ownership of the account I scheduled my transfer to. WTH, the external bank was already verified so why am I made to jump through hoops to get my funds transferred??? I see my other one star review was deleted...hmmmmm.
-
I can honestly say that I really was not too excited about giving my money to these guys, but (1) the website is so easy to use and (2) the customer service is so much better than anything else here. I also have had good experiences with Ally, but this one is the best.
-
CSR have gotten much nicer. I think they retrained them or found a different outfit after acquiring it from GE Capital.

I'm not happy that I'm required to give info over the phone for some transactions because I don't think
the phone is more secure than online. However, their interest rate is ok. -
I don't like the fact that deposits for new depositors is capped at $250,000 per individual, but $3M for those who were at GE Capital.
-
I have an account here not for love of Goldman and what they did to the country a few years ago, but because I had an account at GE Capital and it was acquired (was also not a fan of GE Capital). Just need to say that everything about this account is great, especially customer service, attention to detail and speed of ACH transfers (large transfers are instantaneous for me, even though they say that they may take up to 3 days). I have banked with other on the list and not had problems, but this is the best. Don't let goldman's ownership scare you away!
-
But I am giving it 5 stars because they blow their competitors away
-
I thought this articles was funny. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/19/business/dealbook/after-147-years-goldman-sachs-hangs-a-shingle-on-main-street.html. I learned nothing, other than that Daniel Sigal lives in Northridge California and is a customer. Also, found it funny how some guy from Bankmobile starts bad-mouthing them. (WTF is Bankmobile?). Anyway, GS Bank is very solid and as good as any bank on this table. Haters will always look for a reason to hate.
-
Wanted to give it 5 stars.
-
This is a very well run online bank with a very clean website. When I go to Ally I feel like I am in someone's dirty attic and when I go to Synchrony I feel like I am speaking to their confused relative. I value this bank because there is none of that here.

lolz! :)
-
Never ever had a problem when it was GE, and since the site is the same with a new logo, I am still comfortable here, so long as Bernie the GS-basher isn't elected.
-
I was a little concerned about the transition, but Goldman Sachs took everything from the old GE Capital site and just put new skin on it. Now that the transition is complete, I feel more comfortable as a depositor that GS will remain very competitive as they get a foothold in this space.
