Wish You Could Join a Credit Union? If You Live in MA or NH, Now You Can

Now residents of Massachusetts and New Hampshire can be part of a credit union merely by living in that state, or by working for a company that is based in Massachusetts. Best of all, this particular credit union offers a checking account that allows you to earn up to 2.75% APY on your deposit.

If you’ve ever wanted to join a credit union but don't happen to work for any companies that have a credit union, now you can, if you live in Massachusetts or New Hampshire. Workers' Credit Union is a state-chartered community credit union and their field membership allows them to accept members who either reside in Massachusetts or New Hampshire or work for a company that is based in Massachusetts. You can begin your membership by simply opening a Share Savings Account with as little as $25 or a high rate (1.09%) cuSave Account with as little as $500.

Workers’ Credit Union is currently offering a reward checking account called Xtreme Checking. Like many other reward checking accounts, there are a few hoops to jump through in order to get the reward interest rate. However, for most people, the requirements are not very difficult to meet. For balances from $0 - $25,000, you can earn a 2.75% APY on your deposit as long as you make 12 debit card transactions, receive your monthly statement electronically, and have one direct deposit or automatic withdrawal each statement cycle. Balances over $25,000 will earn 1.01% APY. As an added bonus, you will get up to $10 in ATM fees refunded each statement cycle during which these requirements are met as well.

The nice thing about this account is that even if you don't meet the requirements in a particular month, your deposit will still earn 0.10% APY—which is comparable to the APY offered for savings accounts by many mainstream banks. Additionally, you will never have a monthly fee and there are no minimum balance requirements that need to be met. Of course, once you’re a member, you can also take advantage of all of the other credit union’s products, including loans, insurance, and investment services. Him and

Great information except that there is no "now" about it. There are many, many credit unions in MA and NH that have had community charters for a number of years (a number of them statewide).

BTW -- Worker's is an outstanding choice!
