Impossible Not to be Inspired by Mark Kelly’s Senate Ad

Mark Kelly is an astronaut and Gabrielle Giffords’ husband. In the years following Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting, he has become a vocal proponent of gun control.

He announced this morning that he is running for John McCain’s seat against Martha McSally.

Mark Kelly wouldn’t be the first Senator to have been to space. John Glenn, the first astronaut to orbit the earth, was a Senator from Ohio for over 25 years and Bill Nelson was a payload specialist on the Shuttle Challenger in 1996 while a sitting member of Congress.

But, right now more than ever, we desperately need someone who believes in and understands science in the Senate. And, more importantly, the Democrats desperately need more adults in the room if they are to win back the Senate and compete for electoral college votes in states like Arizona.

As a former Republican who desperately wants to support Democrats, I found this campaign announcement this morning to be something I could finally hang onto:

Both parties need more Mark Kelly's. Accomplished, driven, and someone who has served his country in many roles, and clearly qualified, in contrast to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who has radical ideas, no real experience do anything meaningful and is polarizing.
