New York Sends Open Letter to Jeff Bezos Begging Amazon to Reconsider

A little more than 2 weeks after the self-induced disaster at the hands of so-called politicians Jimmy Van Bramer and Michael Gianaris, New York's grown ups are trying to get a hold of things.

The New York Times reported last night that Governor Andrew Cuomo was actively courting Jeff Bezos to see if there are other ways to bring Amazon back to New York and Long Island City. Today, an open letter to Amazon was published in the NY Times with 80 leading politicians encouraging Amazon to come back.

The letter is signed by a “Who’s Who” of New York and highlights the majority view of New Yorkers – Amazon being here would be good for everyone.

The letter is compelling and well-worth reading. It is here.

It makes sense to make a final hands-on effort to get Amazon to reverse course and proceed wiith its original HQ2 plans that would yield 25,000 high paying permanent jobs, 11,000 union construction jobs and $28 billion in new tax revenue to the City over the next seven years.

Noticeably absent, of course, from the discussion is Mayor Bill DeBlasio. DeBlasio has been a better mayor than most had expected and appeared to be one of the leaders who spent years actively courting Amazon. He, nonetheless, publicly celebrated their departure two weeks ago. As a result, I would imagine that his very mayoralty will be a tremendous obstacle to getting Amazon to reconsider.
